Commune with nature, get some exercise and it’s easy.
- Rent a kayak either a single or tandem to paddle with kids or a significant other.
- Put on your life vest, sit on it, grab your paddle and go.
This is not the white water river type kayak, but a float on top, get a little bit wet, lazy man’s kayak. Meander over the kelp beds, bask in the sun and enjoy the California coastline.
Most rentals start at 2 hours minimum.
Recommended local locations:
- Beginners: Huntington Harbor (Huntington Beach)
- Beginners and Intermediate: Santa Barbara (at the harbor) – warm up in the marina and head out into the ocean if it’s calm (try 8-10 a.m.) Kelp beds, sea lions, sometimes dolphins and occasionally whales can be seen!
- Intermediate: Malibu – Requires beach entry directly into the ocean. Similar ocean life to Santa Barbara
Other locations: Dana Point, San Diego, Moss Landing (Bird Sanctuary), Channel Islands from Santa Barbara (caves).
Preparations:
- Waterproof sunblock and take it with you to reapply. (Don’t forget the upper leg, tops of the feet and back of the neck).
- Sunhat
- Swim trunks
- Water and snacks
